What to expect

Depart from Athens on this half-day afternoon trip to see the best of the Cape Sounion area. Begin your Sounion tour with a wonderful drive along the scenic coastal road which affords a splendid view of the Saronic Gulf, passing through some of Athens most beautiful suburbs (Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, Varkiza). As you approach Cape Sounion, you will see it rise like a sheer cliff out of the sea. At Cape Sounion you will visit the 5th century B.C. Temple of Poseidon with one of the most breath-taking panoramic views in the world, on a clear day you can see at least seven islands. The precipice is a sheer 197-foot drop to the sea. Land masses to the west stand out in sharp profile, the island of Aegina backed by the mountains of the Peloponnese.

Things to look out for

Cape Sounion is noted as the site of the ancient Greek Temple of Poseidon, the God of the sea in classical mythology. The remains are perched on the headland, surrounded on three sides by the sea. The columns of the Temple of Poseidon have framed the blue sea backdrop since 44 BC. The beauty of the surviving Doric columns has inspired many poets. One column is in fact inscribed by none other than Lord Byron, who visited the temple in the early 19th century. The view across the Aegean is magnificent, extending all the way to Kea and the Peloponnese on a clear day.

Helpful Tips

Comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses, hat and loose fitted clothing are strongly recommended. Complimentary pickup service is offered before the departure of the tour from Athens central hotels.
