The Katholikon of the Monastery is a cross-in-square church. The Monastery is associated with the resurgance of the monastic life in Greece and dates back to the 12th century. The life of Hosios Meletios the Younger († 1 September), part of whose Holy Skull is kept at the Monastery, is closely connected with the history of the Monastery as he was its founder and also the founder of a number of monasteries located at a short or long distance from the Monastery. The murals date back to the 17th century. The Monastery is under the jurisdiction of the Holy Metropolis of Megara and Salamina.
