Churches and Monasteries/Churches and Monasteries
The domed octagonal cross-shaped Katholikon of the Monastery dates back to the 10th century. It is the biggest Monastery of the mid-Byzantine period. It has been listed on UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It contains the best preserved complex of mosaics of the Macedonian Renaissance. The Katholikon adjoins the Byzantine church of the Annunciation of the Theotokos. The Monastery houses the holy relic of its founder, Hosios Loukas († 7 February). The Monastery is under the jurisdiction of the Holy Metropolis of Thiva and Levadia. It is worth visiting the church of Panagia Skripou (874), at Orchomenos, Boetia (25a).
