The construction of the Monastery of Hagia Lavra (photo) started in 961 A.D. It was the center of the war of independence declared against the Turks in 1821 and it was there that the flag Independence of was raised. It was repeatedly set afire by the Turks. The Monastery of Mega Spilaio was founded in 362 A.D. by the brothers Symeon and Theodore who found the miraculous icon of Panagia made of wax and mastic by Luke the Evangelist (32a). The church of Panagia Trypiti, in Aigio, which is at a close distance, is worth visiting (32b). The Monasteries is under the jurisdiction of the Holy Metropolis of Kalavryta and Aigialeia.
