Description:
A four-columned cross-in-square church of the 11th or 12th century, located next to the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens. On the upper part, ninety ancient Greek, Roman, early Christian and Byzantine reliefs were used as a frieze around the church. It was initially dedicated to Panagia Gorgoepikoos (Virgin Mary, quick to answer prayers). However, after a failed murder attempt against king Otto (1861) it was named “Hagios Sozon” while later, with the deposition of Otto, Hagios Eleftherios. The church is under the jurisdiction of the Holy Archdiocese of Athens.
